Actively reviving the centuries old art of Nordic rya rug making, Byrdcall Studio, LLC offers quality traditional supplies from Norway, Finland, and vintage USA spun rya yarn. Melinda Purcell Byrd published RYA RUGS–Design and Make Your Own in 2020. The 298-page book teaches history, knotting techniques, color blending and designing. Rya rug making has been compared to “painting with a needle” where the blended wool strands create unlimited potential for color.
She lectures, demonstrates, and teaches classes suitable for beginners and advanced artists. Byrdcall Studio, LLC is located at her home in Woodbine, Maryland as is open by appointment. The Studio holds occasional “Rya Sewing Circles” and Open Studio Days for drop-in visitors.
In addition to being the go-to person in the USA for off-loom rya rug making, Melinda is accomplished as a printmaker and visual artist. Her studio is full of multifaceted art including hand-printed shirts, frameable woodcut and linocut originals, weavings, collage, and nature sketches.
