Beyond the Pastel Watercolor Palette: How to Paint with a Full Range of Values

 

Watercolor Workshop with Ellen Elmes, Feb 2 and 3

   
 
For beginners with some previous watercolor experience to advanced
 
Participants will work on small-scale, hands-on exercises utilizing complementary color schemes for developing a full range of color values in paintings of varied subject matter. The instructor will demonstrate techniques and guide participants through the process of building color and value contrasts from clean whites to deep darks.
 
The cost is $150/person for both sessions.  To register please contact Ellen Elmes at ellen.elmes@gmail.com.  There is a limit of 15 participants, so please reigister early. Payment must be made by Jan. 8, 2018.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS
 PAPER:  
 140 lb. watercolor paper, single sheets or pads.  Not all-purpose watercolor/drawing paper.  Suggested brand:  d'Arches, 100% rag, cold-pressed, 22 x 30 inch sheets or pad, 140 lb.
 Needed for workshop: (1) full sheet cut into (4) quarter sheets… OR… (4) sheets 11”x15”
 
PAINTS:  
 Necessary colors for limited palette: cadmium red light, alizarin crimson permanent or carmine, cadmium yellow light or Aureolin yellow, yellow ochre, violet, (not cobalt violet), sap green, viridian green, cobalt or ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, burnt sienna, burnt umber.
 Quantity:  (1) tube of each.  Suggested brands: Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Cheap Joe’s, Grumbacher, van Gogh tube watercolors
 
BRUSHES:
 Wash Brush: at least 3/4", preferably 1".  Suggested brands: Winsor & Newton, Robert Simmons, Cheap Joe's.
 Round Brush: full at base but comes to a point; medium size.  Suggested brands:  Robert Simmons Whitesable Rounds #10 or #12.
 
Instructor will have some extra paint, paper, and brushes for those in need of some materials.
